FOR SALE – 1976 Toyota Chinook (Hilux Truck) RV Pop-Top Camper Micro Mini Motorhome
My wife and I bought this classic Toyota Chinook a little over a year ago, and named him “Charlie,” after my our Grandfather, who owned a similar camper truck. Our plan was to renovate Charlie, and use him as our own personal ‘Beach House’, to take camping out on the North Carolina coastline on the weekends. We got as far as gutting out the camper section of the truck to begin our renovations. However, life took a turn for us and we are now moving (much) closer to the beaches, so we will no longer have a reason for the weekend getaways with Charlie. Not to mention, the place we are moving into only provides us with one parking spot, so we will not have a place to park Charlie. Trust us, it absolutely breaks our hearts to have to let him go. so we are really hoping to find someone who understands the significance of a Toyota Chinook and already knows how amazing these campers are. They simply don’t make vehicles like this anymore, and they are very often be hard to find!
We started an Instagram account – “Charlie, The Chinook” – @charlie_the.chinook – when we first purchased Charlie, so we could post pictures of our renovation progress. There are a lot of photos there, in addition to what is posted here. FYI, don’t be alarmed by the photo on the tow truck; it was a false alarm. The problem ended up being a simple wiring issue that was resolved very easily (I’ll can explain further in person). Look us up on Instagram for more information about and pictures of this Toyota Chinook!
You should know that Charlie runs great! He is actually a dream to drive! Charlie still has his original Toyota 20R 4-cylinder engine, but with a new head that the last owner (a mechanic who owned multiple Chinooks) installed. The past owner also put a new clutch in the transmission before we took ownership. Charlie does have the factory installed 5-speed manual tranny, which is fantastic! Once he settles into 5th gear on the highway or back roads, Charlies glides effortlessly like butter on hot corn; seriously so much fun to drive! You should also know that technically a Toyota Chinook is an Toyota Hilux Pick-Up Truck with a Chinook Fiberglass Camper installed on the back, so when you are doing research research on Chinook’s, make sure you are also reading about Hilux trucks.
If you don’t mind, please don’t contact us if you are going to try and nickle-and-dime us because of the repairs you are going to have to do. You should only be considering buying this 1976 Toyota Chinook for $3,500.00 because you are comfortable with the idea of and aware of the fact that you will have to do work on it. $3,500.00 gets you the Chinook itself, and you will have to spend more money to fix and renovate it. Charlie is 42-years old, and he needs someone that wants to give him some love. Our Instagram account captures a lot of the areas of work needed. When we meet in person, we will be sure to review everything in detail that needs to be addressed. But please know in advance that there are holes in the floorboard, rusted areas on the body, windows that needs to be resealed, screens that need to be repaired, gauges that may act funny, door handles that are broken, etc., etc., etc.
All-in-all, Charlie is in good condition, mechanically sound, and runs solid. The fiberglass camper body is fully intact and ready to renovate. If you looking for a project to get involved with, perhaps for yourself to escape in or as a family project with your child(ren) to teach them about old school mechanics, give us a call or send a text or an email. Let’s meet up, and take Charlie out for a spin! I swear, every time Charlie and I go out for a drive, I find myself grinning from ear-to-ear, and so will you! Don’t forget, Charlie is a stick / manual, so make sure you know how to drive this type vehicle. We have the title in hand for Charlie, and he is licensed and registered in the state of North Carolina with a tag, so he is good to go. One extra perk is, because of Charlie’s age, there are no emission checks are required!
Alright, let’s do this – you know you want to! 🙂
